Fishing on Buoy 10: What Can You Catch?
Chinook Salmon
Buoy 10 salmon fishing, particularly for Chinook salmon — also known as "King Salmon" — is the primary attraction in Astoria, Oregon, during the month of August. This represents one of the best fishing opportunities in the Pacific Northwest. Buoy 10 is a world-renowned fishery where the mighty Columbia River meets the ocean. Fishing takes place in this estuary, and at times, we venture into the ocean when conditions permit. The Buoy 10 area spans approximately 20 miles, from the mouth of the river to Tongue Point. Each year, thousands of hungry salmon, freshly returned from the ocean, enter the area’s surrounding river system. This area serves as a staging ground for these fish, preparing to make their journey upriver to spawn in their native tributaries.

Coho Salmon
Coho fishing at Buoy 10 is an exhilarating, action-packed adventure. Much like Chinook fishing, coho salmon fishing in this renowned fishery is exceptional. These coho are incredibly aggressive, with one singular objective: to feed. They are staging and aggressively feeding to build mass before returning home to spawn—creating the perfect conditions for anglers to catch willing coho that will strike almost anything resembling bait.
The coho season typically begins in July and continues through September, with much of our early August fishing occurring in the ocean, where the coho fishing is so remarkable that it becomes a must-do experience for anglers seeking non-stop action.

Sturgeon
Astoria Sturgeon fishing is a one-of-a-kind fishery with nothing compared to this unique estuary environment. White sturgeon flock to the mouth of the Columbia and roam the bottom of the sands in search of food. It starts around the month of May and gets really good in June, clear through September. These sturgeon come to feed and are willing to bite anything from bait fish to sand shrimp. Sturgeon are bottom feeders with an incredible sense of smell. With their keen noses, they can detect food sources with ease. Making the fishing opportunities for catching these massive fish fantastic.
