Best Catches of the Klickitat River
Chinook Salmon
Klickitat chinook salmon fishing is excellent because many of these fish stack up in the mouth of the river. The fish congregate and mill around this area as a way to cool off from the warm waters of the Columbia at this time of year. With the Klickitat River being fed by cool mountain running waters, it's a great stopping point for fish.
We fish for Chinook salmon from September into October. We will launch from Mayer State Park on the Oregon side of the river and it’s only a five-minute boat ride to the fishing grounds.
The fishing here is great because not only do we catch chinook salmon headed up the Klickitat River, we also intercept other chinook bound for the many tributaries of the Columbia River due to the cool waters of the Klickitat.

Coho Salmon
Klickitat coho fishing is also amazing. This is one of the best places to target coho salmon in the mid-Columbia section of the river before they pass by on their way to the spawning grounds.
We fish for coho salmon in late September through early November. As with the chinook salmon run, we will launch from Mayer State Park on the Oregon side of the river and will be at the fishing grounds five minutes later.
This is a staging ground for coho salmon as they stack up in the thousands, waiting for the fall rains to arrive and raise the water level of the Klickitat River. Since they pool up in such large numbers, this fishery is a great place to catch coho.
